Iona suspends A.J. English

Iona has suspended star guard A.J. English for Friday night's game against Siena (ESPNU, 7 p.m.), for his role in the postgame melee following the team's overtime win over St. Peter's last Saturday.

English and St. Peter's guard Desi Washington got into a verbal altercation after the final buzzer. Both benches cleared, a referee tried to pull English away from the scrum, and English pushed the referee aside to re-enter the fray.

Iona said the one-game suspensions came "as a result of [English's] involvement in the initiation of an unsportsmanlike incident," in a statement released by the school.

English, a 6-foot-4 junior from Wilmington, Del., is the ninth-leading scorer in Division I, averaging 20.7 points per game. He also leads the team in assists, at 5.6 per game.

The Gaels (16-6, 9-2 MAAC) are currently in first place in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, and seeking their third NCAA Tournament bid in five seasons under coach Tim Cluess.

Iona is currently projected as a No. 12 seed in the latest edition of ESPN.com's Bracketology.
