Auburn picked up its seventh 2016 commitment on Wednesday afternoon as ESPN 300 quarterback Ervin "Woody: Barrett gave his pledge to the Tigers during a ceremony at his school.
The 6-foot-2, 219-pound signal-caller from West Orange High School in Orlando, Florida, is the No. 80 prospect in the ESPN 300 and chose the Tigers over Alabama and Oregon. The addition of Barrett is significant, considering he was the highest rated of the five 2016 ESPN 300 quarterbacks that had yet to make a decision.
Barrett is the third-ranked dual-threat quarterback in the country and should fit nicely into Gus Malzahn's spread attack. As a junior, Barrett threw for 1,558 yards and 24 passing touchdowns while leading his team to a school-best 11-2 record. He also added another 813 yards and nine touchdowns on the ground.
The addition of Barrett caps off a great recruiting week for Auburn. The Tigers picked up a commitment from ESPN 300 wide receiver Eli Stove on Saturday as well as one of the top 2017 offensive linemen in the country, Calvin Ashley, who is also an Orlando native.
Barrett will join a quarterback group that includes Jeremy Johnson, redshirt freshman Sean White and true freshman Tyler McQueen. In total, Auburn has four commitments ranked in the ESPN 300.
As for Alabama and Oregon, the Crimson Tide have no shortage of quarterbacks on their roster. Jacob Coker and David Cornwell appear to be battling for the starting job and five-star, Class of 2015 quarterback Blake Barnett turned some heads during spring practices. The Tide also have a chance of landing another ESPN 300 dual-threat quarterback, Jawon Pass, who is planning to make his decision in the near future.
Oregon, meanwhile, is also in a good position at quarterback. The Ducks already have a commitment from ESPN 300 quarterback Seth Green and signed two other ESPN 300 quarterbacks, Morgan Mahalak and Travis Jonsen, in the 2014 and 2015 classes, respectively.
