Fantasy La Liga: Best picks at every position

Here are some key stats to consider for the top La Liga options this week before selecting your fantasy team.

Forwards

Atlético Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann has scored 11 goals since December and has logged 12 or more fantasy points in his past 10 games, the second longest active streak in La Liga behind Lionel Messi. Facing one of the league's weakest sides in Villarreal means a good chance that streak continues, making him a safe pick for your Tier 1 forward spot. Although picking Griezmann sounds smart, selecting Messi is always recommended, specially this week that the Argentinian faces Sevilla, the team that has conceded the most goals by Messi (33 goals in 36 meetings in all competitions). A good Tier 2 option is Charles of Eibar, who is the only outfield player with 17 or more fantasy points the past three weeks.

Midfielders

Since January 1, Real Betis midfielder Sergio Canales has the second highest fantasy points per game (19.30), behind only Messi. However, a bulk of those points come from completed passes, and he is facing Real Valladolid, one of La Liga's toughest home sides against the pass, with only five clubs allowing fewer per game. That said, you could save your Tier 1 Midfielder spot for Real Madrid's Vinícius, who was rested last weekend against Girona and is facing a Levante side that gives up the most assists per game from the left wing (0.5).

For your Tier 2 midfielder, think about Rodrigo: The 22-year-old should remain in Atlético Madrid's starting lineup this week (Thomas is suspended, Koke remains injured). Rodrigo leads all midfielders in fantasy points from successful tackles, while his opponent this week, Villarreal, ranks fifth in possessions lost this season.

A good option for Tier 3 midfield is Espanyol's Sergio García, who is at home facing Huesca, the team that gives up the most fantasy points to opponents on average.

Defenders and goalkeepers

With Sergio Ramos suspended and Raphaël Varane injured, there are no good Real Madrid options for Tier 1 Defender. Barcelona's Sergi Roberto is a good choice. No defender has more fantasy points from assists from the right wing, and he is facing a Sevilla side that gives up more chances created from the right wing than any other part of the field (145). A good bet for Tier 2 is Leganés left back Jonathan Silva, who faces an Alavés side that gives up the second most chances created per game to left-sided defenders.

Real Sociedad's Gerónimo Rulli is a strong play as your goalkeeper as he faces a Girona side with the fewest shots in the league this season (241).
