Melbourne Victory were tumbled out of the A-League finals in the most ruthless fashion on Sunday night, smacked for six by their arch rivals Sydney FC.
The 6-1 loss wasn't just the biggest in the club's history, it was also one of the most unexpected results.
Melbourne Victory were the reigning champions, and could point to a history of 'big game' performances to stack up their case for another grand final appearance.
That reputation is now in tatters.
"There's no nice way to put it and it kills me," Victory captain Carl Valeri said.
Valeri was denied a chance to end his A-League career with a grand final with the result, given the former Socceroo had already announced his retirement.
The 34-year-old was overlooked by coach Kevin Muscat for his starting eleven, with Elvis Kamsoba and Raul Baena preferred.
Valeri said "all credit" should go to Sydney FC for their stunning success.
"They should be very happy with their win," he said.
"They outclassed us in every aspect and they taught us a big lesson here tonight.
"Unfortunately it's (the) last lesson I will learn.
"We've worked hard all season and to go out all season like this is hard."
