On the heels of Monday's record-setting rout, Southern University coach Roman Banks told ESPN.com that the Jaguars will play Champion Baptist College again next season.
"The two head coaches think it's important to play because there was no intent to embarrass anyone," Banks told ESPN.com on Wednesday.
On Monday, Southern scored the first 44 points of the game -- an NCAA record -- and wound up with a 116-12 victory over Champion Baptist. The Jaguars broke the all-divisions record held by Seton Hall, which scored the first 34 points against Kean on Nov. 19, 1998.
Champion Baptist coach Eric Capaci told FoxSports.com that he was shocked at the way Southern kept applying defensive pressure.
"For whatever reason, Southern pressed us the entire game," he said. "I have no idea why. [Banks] has his reasons for that. Normally a school would not try to destroy us like that."
Banks, who said he reached out to Capaci after seeing his comments, said there was no intent to run up the score and that he was unaware of the 44-0 margin late in the first half.
"We talked and we want to play to set the record straight and show people that there was no intent to hurt anyone or embarrass them," Banks said. "We both felt it was best to play again."
Champion Baptist is located in Hot Springs, Ark., and is an independent member of the Association of Christian College Athletics. The Tigers finished 3-for-44 from the field and didn't score until Kris Connor made two free throws with 5:10 remaining in the first half.
Southern faced Champion Baptist in December 2012 as well, winning 90-36.
