VMI hires Dan Earl as new coach

LEXINGTON, Va. -- VMI has hired former Navy assistant coach Dan Earl as its men's basketball coach.

Earl was introduced Monday as the successor to Duggar Baucom, the winningest coach in Keydets history. Baucom resigned March 30 to take the same job at VMI's archrival, The Citadel.

Earl has been the associate head coach at Navy since 2011-12. Before that, he was an assistant coach at Penn State from 2006-11, each time working under Ed DeChellis. The Nittany Lions reached the NCAA tournament for the first time in 10 years in the 2010-11 season.

Earl's duties as associate head coach included serving as recruiting director, scheduling, scouting of opponents, game preparation and player development.

He becomes the 28th head coach in VMI's basketball history.
