South Dakota's Dave Boots retiring

South Dakota men's basketball coach Dave Boots has retired after 25 years at the school.

Boots, 57, departs with a 503-235 career mark -- and the news comes less than a month before the official start of practice. He took the program from Division II into the Division I ranks and led the Coyotes to 23 consecutive winning seasons from 1989 to 2011.

"For the past 25 years, I've enjoyed leading the Coyote basketball program," he said in a statement. "The time has come for a new face and a new voice to now lead."

South Dakota finished 10-20 this past season -- its second in the Summit League. The team made the transition into Division I in 2008-09, won the Great West championship in 2009-10 and then went into the Summit in 2011-12.

There was no immediate announcement from South Dakota as to who will take over for Boots.
