Robert Upshaw transferring to UW

Former Fresno State center Robert Upshaw told ESPN.com that he has decided to transfer to Washington.

"I had a nice visit with both Washington and Oregon," said the 7-foot Upshaw, who was dismissed from Fresno State's program last month following a disappointing freshman campaign. "I just felt like Washington was a better fit for me as a player.

"I liked it there, I felt comfortable and am looking forward to a new start."

Upshaw was a top-50 recruit coming out of high school in Fresno and chose the local school over several Pac-12 programs. He missed the start of the season because of a knee injury and also was suspended twice -- once in February and once at the end of the regular season.

"I went through a tough period at Fresno State," Upshaw said. "I had some maturity problems and didn't focus on what was in front of me. It all made me realize that I need to focus on what's important. I love the game."

Upshaw averaged 4.1 point and 3.8 rebounds in 22 games last season.
