Javelin thrower Sundar Singh Gurjar won gold at the 2017 World Para Athletics Championships in London, becoming the first Indian para-athlete to achieve this feat.
Sundar, who had been disqualified from his event in Rio 2016 due to technical reasons, found redemption, securing the World Champion tag with a personal best throw of 60.36m in the javelin F46 event.
Speaking after his event, Sundar said, "I was very disappointed after Rio, as I had prepared intensely and ultimately, could not compete. My morale was completely broken then, but I am delighted with this comeback to competition. I had trained hard for the World Championships as well, but not as much as I had done for Rio.
"Hence, this gold medal is great motivation for me to perform even better from here on. I have recovered fully, and will do even better at the Asian Games (next year)."
Sundar had won three golds in three different events -- javelin throw, shot put and discus throw -- earlier this year. Speaking to ESPN, he had then said, "I haven't visited my family in Karauli, Rajasthan in the last three years. I wanted to achieve something before I went home. Now all I have in mind is to make my mark in the World Championships and visit them. I miss them."
The event also saw another impressive performance by 18-year old Rinku. After finishing 5th in Rio, he bettered his personal best from the Paralympics with a 55.12m throw, to finish fourth.
