Match Commentary

81'66-7 End of second half
80'South Africa run out convincing winners on the back of a scintillating first-half performance. The won the second half only 19-7, despite having a man advantage throughout, but they'll focus on the intensity and excellence they displayed in the first 40. Canada, conversely, will focus on the heart they displayed in the second half to regain some pride from the fixture ahead of their final game against Namibia on Sunday.
78'Canada go wide but DTH Van der Merwe spills the ball in space to bomb the opportunity.
76'South Africa win a penalty on halfway, through Kwagga Smith on the ground, but that was effectively the result of a great chase of Handre Pollard's clearing kick by Damian de Allende and Warrick Gelant to stop the counter. Elton Jantjies fails to find touch from the penalty, however, and the chance to press again is lost.
75'Substitute on - Guiseppe du Toit , Canada
75'Player substituted - Ciaran Hearn , Canada
75'Player substituted - Mike Sheppard , Canada
75'Substitute on - Tyler Ardron , Canada
73'Frans Malherbe scores his first Test try, simply running through the defence after being fed by Herschel Jantjies following good work from the forwards on the blindside.
73'66-7 Try - Frans Malherbe , South Africa
68'61-7 Conversion - Elton Jantjies , South Africa
66'Damian Willemse scores his first Test try, in his second start, crossing unopposed after Sbu Nkosi, Elton Jantjies and Handre Pollard combined to put him clear past the outside defender.
66'59-7 Try - Damian Willemse , South Africa
63'Sbu Nkosi does well to link with Damian Willemse, popping a super offload out the back of his right hand, and the fullback feeds Warrick Gelant. The winger kicks ahead but Jeff Hasler collects the ball only to carry it over and concede a 5m scrum after touching down.
63'Substitute on - Shane O'Leary , Canada
63'Player substituted - Peter Nelson , Canada
63'Player substituted - Damian de Allende , South Africa
63'Substitute on - Handre Pollard , South Africa
60'South Africa have little of the physical or mental intensity of the first half after the restart, conceding penalties and free-kicks while making mistakes in execution and lacking a little shape.
60'Kwagga Smith fails to grab a clearing kick from Canada, but gets fingers on the ball to gift Canada a lineout. South Africa's effort to this point in the second half putting into context just how good they were in the first 40.
60'Herschel Jantjies pressures Jamie Mackenzie at the base of the scrum, and the pass goes lose, but Frans Steyn concedes a penalty at the breakdown. South Africa not as sharp in the second half.
58'Knock-ons either way, and Canada have a midfield scrum.
58'Substitute on - Malcolm Marx , South Africa
58'Player substituted - Schalk Brits , South Africa
56'Player substituted - Phil Mack , Canada
56'Substitute on - Jamie Mackenzie , Canada
56'Player substituted - Tyler Ardron , Canada
56'Substitute on - Mike Sheppard , Canada
56'Substitute on - Benoit Piffero , Canada
56'Player substituted - Andrew Quattrin , Canada
56'54-7 Conversion - Elton Jantjies , South Africa
55'52-7 Try - Schalk Brits , South Africa
54'Player substituted - Vincent Koch , South Africa
54'Substitute on - Frans Malherbe , South Africa
54'Substitute on - Steven Kitshoff , South Africa
54'Player substituted - Thomas du Toit , South Africa
53'South Africa win a lineout, through R.G. Snyman at the tail, and they spread the ball right. Seven phases later, the ball coming back left, Schalk Brits carries two Canadian defenders over the line for South Africa's first score of the second stanza.
53'Cue another South African demolition job at the set-piece, but they fail to retain the ball after Elton Jantjies snipes. Jeff Hasler and Sbu Nkosi race for the hacked ball, with the Springboks winger just besting his rival. South Africa back on the attack, and Matt Heaton penalised at the ensuing breakdown.
52'Substitute on - Herschel Jantjies , South Africa
52'Player substituted - Cobus Reinach , South Africa
51'South Africa destroy another Canada scrum, but they must go again after being stopped at a ruck.
49'Great counter from South Africa after R.G. Snyman wins a Canada lineout. Warrick Gelant is just hauled down, and knocks on in contact, after fielding a deft grubber from Damian de Allende following hands from the lineout.
49'Andrew Coe makes a break from an offload by Tyler Ardron, in first phase from the kick-off. Much better from Canada, while South Africa are yet to get started again after the oranges.
48'47-7 Conversion - Peter Nelson , Canada
46'47-5 Try - Matt Heaton , Canada
45'Tyler Ardron wins the lineout and sets a rolling maul that goes nowhere. Jeff Hassler is just short after a bust through the fly-half channel, and Canada go over in the next phase through Matt Heaton. Nervous moments as the officials go for a TMO check for a potential block against Elton Jantjies, but the score is rightfully awarded.
45'Solid defence from South Africa, who effect a turnover before Damian de Allende clears. Canada take a quick thrown to keep the ball in play, but South Africa effect a turnover. Canada win a turnover back, and then win a penalty that Peter Nelson puts back in the right corner.
42'Now deep in South Africa territory after Elton Jantjies penalised for going off his feet at the tackle. Attacking lineout, and then a freekick after SOuth Africa close the gap.
41'We're back underway, with Elton Jantjies restarting for South Africa. Canada just about collect the ball under pressure, and Peter Nelson clears his lines but fails to find touch. South Africa return against more passive defence, but Canada win a penalty at the breakdown after Evan Olmstead outmuscles Franco Mostert over the ball.
41'Player substituted - Jake Ilnicki , Canada
41'Substitute on - Matt Tierney , Canada
41'Substitute on - Djustice Sears-Duru , Canada
41'Player substituted - Hubert Buydens , Canada
41'+147-0 End of first half
41'+147-0 Conversion - Elton Jantjies , South Africa
40'The teams go to the sheds, with South Africa having produced a masterclass performance against outmatched opponents. The Boks have scored seven tries to nil in producing their most complete effort of the tournament. They'll be looking to maintain discipline, structure, intensity and skill levels in the second half, as players look to press their claims for starting sports in the knockout phase, and they'll likely post 100+ points if they do. The second half is all about pride for Canada. They have been abysmal in defence; they simply must show more heart and effort without the ball.
40'Frans Steyn scores to complete the first-half nightmare for Canada. South Africa push too early in the scrum to concede a free-kick. Phil Mack taps and goes for Canada then throws an intercept to the Springboks centre.
40'47-0 Start of second half
40'45-0 Try - Frans Steyn , South Africa
38'South Africa just help up, with Sbu Nkosi pulled down just before the line after a first-phase bust from Siya Kolisi in midfield. Chance goes begging when Kwagga Smith knocks on trying to pick the ball on the ground rather than driving over it to create a ruck.
37'This could get to three figures if South Africa maintain their intensity and execution against 14 men.
36'Red card - Josh Larsen , Canada
35'Canadian attack comes to an end when an attempted cross-kick from Peter Nelson is charged down. Play called back for illegal play by Josh Larsen, who charges Thomas du Toit with a shoulder to the neck. Illegal entry and no mitigation. Canada's night has just got much harder.
35'Tyler Ardron breaks from the scrum but South Africa's defence will not be broken. Great discipline from the Boks on their tryline.
33'Canada attack from the penalty, and Peter Nelson launches a superb kick-pass towards the left wing, where Sbu Nkosi and Damian de Allende just about combine to stop DTH Van Der Merwe from scoring for Canada. 5m scrum Canada.
32'Canada at last show something with ball in hand, Phil Mack sniping from behind a scrum and combining with Evan Olmstead to set up a bust deep into Springboks territory. South Africa backs offisde at the ensuing break.
30'Such is the dominance of the South African scrum that Thomas du Toit is spending more time and effort keeping his direct opponent, Jake Ilnicki, up than he is in scrummaging aggressively.
29'40-0 Conversion - Elton Jantjies , South Africa
28'38-0 Try - Warrick Gelant , South Africa
27'Warrick Gelant scores in the right corner, touching down in first phase from a scrum, with Elton Jantjies' pass key. Gelant had plenty to do, and much as his strength got him home that was disgraceful defending from Canada. They're being outmatched by a much superior outfit, but there's an absence of passion and heart in the Canadian performance to this point.
25'R.G. Snyman making a massive bid for a starting berth in the "First XV", as his athletic offloading game really does give the Springboks something not otherwise present in the pack. He also provide the stereotypical physical presence of a South African second-rower.
23'Canada simply unable to handle South Africa; they can't keep the ball in contact, and they can't stop South Africa when they don't have it.
22'33-0 Conversion - Elton Jantjies , South Africa
21'Cobus Reinach bags his third, after more great work from the backs. Superb crosskick from Elton Jantjies direct from the kick-off that is pulled down by Warrick Gelant on the right wing. The winger fed the ball inside to Damian de Allende, running an impressive support line, and the centre feeds the scrum-half, who displays more of his pace to support and run clear for the score.
21'31-0 Try - Cobus Reinach , South Africa
20'26-0 Conversion - Elton Jantjies , South Africa
18'This is getting very ugly, and there's no mercy rule to save Canada from embarrassment.
18'South Africa go through phase, and Cobus Reinach bags his second try from quick ruck ball after yet another huge bust from R.G. Snayman -- and let's be frank also more abysmal defending from Canada.
18'24-0 Try - Cobus Reinach , South Africa
16'Both of Canada's props collapse under pressure, and Elton Jantjies kicks the ensuing penalty for an attacking lineout inside the Canadian 22.
14'Springboks demolish Canada's first scrum to effect a mistake, and now the Boks have a midfield set-piece of their own from which to launch an attack.
13'Substitute on - Josh Larsen , Canada
13'Player substituted - Kyle Baillie , Canada
12'19-0 Conversion - Elton Jantjies , South Africa
11'South Africa simply unstoppable here. Canada unable to get close either to effecting tackles or stopping their opponents anywhere close to the gainline. R.G. Snyman and Franco Mostert combining with broken field running, and all the Springboks right now looking like they have all the skills. Complete performance from South Africa to this point.
10'17-0 Try - Cobus Reinach , South Africa
9'Sensational from Cobus Reinach, the scrum-half sniping left from a ruck inside his own 22 and scything through the Canadian defence. Chip kick over the remaining defender and superb skills to collect the ball on the bounce and sprint clear to touch unopposed. Great pace. Something that perhaps Faf de Klerk does not have in his kitbag.
8'People might suggest that South Africa are "only" playing Canada, but worth noting the Boks' clinical execution of skills has been superb; a step up on their efforts vs. Namibia and Italy in their two previous fixtures.
6'More quick hands at the Boks go left; Kwagga Smith ghosts through a half gap in a wide channel and slips the ball for Sbu Nkosi to cross in the corner.
6'12-0 Try - Sbu Nkosi , South Africa
4'Springboks producing quick ball at almost every breakdown, and Vincent Kock standing out with busts in midfield, while the backs are producing slick hands.
4'Cobus Reinach has made an excellent start at 9, albeit the Boks pack is serving him the ball on a platter.
3'South Africa produce front foot ball that puts their attackers across the gainlain. R.G. Snyman makes a huge bust from a good pass from Elton Jantjies and just can't get his patented offload away. Springboks retain possession and Damian de Allende crosses under the posts. Excellent start from the Boks
3'7-0 Conversion - Elton Jantjies , South Africa
3'5-0 Try - Damian de Allende , South Africa
1'We're under way, with Peter Nelson kicking off for Canada. He goes short, and Francois Louw collects the ball. South Africa clear their lines with a box kick that Sbu Nkosi collects. Canada on back foot and Damian de Allende kicks to touch. Canada linout on their own 22.

1'Hello, and welcome to our Live Text Commentary of the Rugby World Cup Pool B fixture between South Africa and Canada at Kobe Misaki Stadium, Kobe.

The teams have played each other twice before, the Springboks winning both fixtures played in South Africa, but they have not clashed since 2000.

The Springboks are expected to defeat Canada comfortably to confirm their place in the quarterfinals, at which stage of the competition they would be expected to face Japan, Ireland or Scotland as the winners of Pool A -- subject to New Zealand defeating Italy, as expected, in the All Blacks' final group fixture to top Pool B.
