Gloucester and England fly-half Danny Cipriani has been banned for three weeks after he was sent off for a dangerous tackle.

Cipriani was dismissed after his shoulder collided with the head of Munster centre Rory Scannell in Gloucester's 36-22 European Champions Cup defeat in Limerick Saturday.

The Gloucester man will miss Premiership Cup fixtures against Wasps, Bristol and Northampton, though it is likely he would have been rested for those games.

Tournament organisers European Professional Club Rugby handed down their verdict after reviewing the incident at a disciplinary panel in Paris.

EPCR's independent disciplinary committee decided that the offence was in the mid-range, meaning a ban of six weeks was used as a starting point. However, the ban was cut in half thanks to Cipriani's "clear disciplinary record and his timely expression of remorse."

The decision caps a difficult week for Cipriani, 30, after he was also left out of Eddie Jones' England squad for the upcoming November internationals.

The former Wasps, Sale Sharks and Melbourne Rebels back made a big impact after a surprise call-up to England's tour of South Africa in June.

In his first appearance for the national side in a decade, Cipriani set up the crucial try for Johnny May with a measured cross-kick to win the third test in Cape Town.

But he derailed his international return in August following an unsavoury incident involving door-staff and a police officer at a nightclub in Jersey during a pre-season tour with his club.

Cipriani pleaded guilty to common assault and resisting arrest and was fined £2000.

The Rugby Football Union also upheld a charge of being involved in "conduct prejudicial to the interests of the game" but decided not to bring down any further sanction against him.

Despite being named Premiership Player of the Month for September, Cipriani was left out of England's squad for the matches against South Africa, New Zealand, Japan and Australia next month.

An injury crisis had beset Eddie Jones' squad but England's depth in the backs counted against Cipriani, with George Ford and Henry Slade selected at fly-half and Owen Farrell and Elliott Daly available to take on kicking duties.
