Aussie wrap, Day 2: Nick Kyrgios and Sam Stosur among Aussie casualties

MELBOURNE, Australia -- There were eight more Aussies in action on Day 2 of the Australian Open, but only two were able to book a spot in the second round.

Milos Raonic def. Nick Kyrgios (AUS)
6-4, 7-6, 6-4

It was always going to be a danger match for 16th seed Milos Raonic, but the clinical Canadian proved too strong for the unseeded Nick Kyrgios at Melbourne Arena.

Kyrgios battled injury concerns throughout the encounter, calling the trainers multiple times to get strapping on a troublesome right knee, and was unable to force even a single break point opportunity on Raonic's serve.

"He was unbelievable tonight," Kyrgios said of his opponent in his post-match interview. "He was jagging returns from everywhere and I've never seen serving like it. Milos played scary."

In addition, the big Canadian dominated Kyrgios at the net, winning 16 serve and volley points to the Australian's two. Raonic moves on to face Stan Wawrinka in the second round.

Alex Bolt (AUS) def. Jack Sock
4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2

South Australian Alex Bolt scored a come-from-behind win on Tuesday afternoon to knock over American Jack Sock and book his ticket to the second round of the tournament.

After dropping the opening set, the 26-year-old took his game to another level to win 18 of the last seven games en route to his first win at a grand slam.

Bolt's win over Sock has guaranteed the Australian a healthy AU$105,000 in prize money and he will face French No. 29 seed Gilles Simon on Thursday for a spot in the third round.

Johanna Konta def. Ajla Tomljanovic (AUS)
7-6(4), 2-6, 7-6(7)

Ajla Tomljanovic will have lost no supporters after falling to former world No. 4 Johanna Konta in an Australian Open epic on court three which lasted just shy of three hours.

Tomljanovic dropped the opening set in a tiebreaker but stormed back to comfortably win the second and send the match to a decider. Neither player gave an inch in the third and a second tiebreaker was eventually needed to split them.

However, despite leading 6-4 at one stage, Tomljanovic was unable to complete the job as Konta reeled off six of the last seven points to take the tiebreaker 10-7 and advance to the second round.

After bowing out, Tomljanovic said, "I don't mind breakers in general, I just wish there was more consistency with the slams."

Tomljanovic, the world No. 45, has not progressed from the first round at the Australian Open since 2015.

Madison Keys def. Destanee Aiava (AUS)
6-2, 6-2

Victorian wild card Destanee Aiava received her first taste of grand slam tennis on Rod Laver Arena when she faced 17th seed Madison Keys on Tuesday morning.

While playing on centre court may have been a milestone moment for the 18-year-old, Aiava struggled with the American's power and dominant serve, eventually falling to a straight sets defeat in a little over an hour. Keys only dropped five points in the match when her first serve landed and hit a staggering 24 winners to Aiava's six.

After her loss, Aiava admitted she had been struggling to adjust to life as a professional tennis player. "Life on tour is pretty s---, especially travelling, but that's what tennis players have to deal with so that's what I'm learning every day."

This was Aiava's third appearance in the main draw at the Australian Open and she is yet to taste victory having now fallen in the first round on three consecutive occasions.

Other Day 2 results from the Australian Open:
