Wofford runs past rival Furman in FCS second round
Goodson impressive in Wofford's win
Marcus Ray says QB Brandon Goodson executed Wofford's offense in its 28-10 win over Furman.
(STATS) -- Wofford got the ground game going and Furman didn't, allowing the No. 7-seeded Terriers to run off to a 28-10 win in the second round of the FCS playoffs on Saturday.
The Southern Conference rivals, whose campuses are separated by 37 miles, met for the 92nd time but the first in the playoffs. Wofford's option attack, which entered the game averaging 250 rushing yards, had 291 on 53 carries. Furman gained only 52 yards on 27 carries, well below its 240-yard average entering the game.
Wofford (10-2), under 30th-year coach Mike Ayers, advanced to the quarterfinals for the second consecutive season. The Terriers will travel to No. 2 seed North Dakota State (11-1) next Saturday (noon ET kickoff).
Running back Blake Morgan capped the game's opening possession with a 5-yard run and gave the Terriers the lead for good 14-10 on a 33-yard pass from quarterback Brandon Goodson with 45 seconds left in the second quarter.
Lennox McAfee and Andre Stoddard led the rushing attack with 98 and 64 yards, respectively. Chase Nelson and Miller Mosley both scored on 2-yard runs in the second half.
"We felt that we had a good matchup with our front against their front," Ayers said. "We felt that our guys in the secondary could cover their guys and play with them. They're hanging 55 on people and it's one of those things where you look at the film and it's obvious why. They're making big plays, they're blocking well, and their kids have a great deal of confidence. They are a heck of ball club. The game was a game that, for the most part, we won our fair share on all three phases. I really admired the way that our guys competed."
Furman (8-5) relied on quarterback P.J. Blazejowski's 257 passing yards and one touchdown.
The Furman-Wofford series dates to 1889. Wofford has won the last four meetings.
