Jones' 4 TD passes lift New Mexico past UNLV 50-14
New Mexico continues to pile on with Jones' 3rd TD
New Mexico goes up 36-0 with a 33-yard touchdown pass from Sheriron Jones', his third of the game.
LAS VEGAS -- Sheriron Jones threw for four touchdowns and New Mexico rolled to a 50-14 win over UNLV in a Mountain West Conference opener on Saturday.
Jones threw two touchdown passes in the last three minutes of a 29-point second quarter that gave the Lobos (3-2) a 29-0 lead. Jones, who was 13 of 20 for 250 yards, connected with Elijah Lilly for a 74-yard score and then found Anselem Umeh for 26 yards 17 seconds before halftime. The 29 points is a school record for the most in a quarter against an FBS school and the 50 points are the most the Lobos scored against UNLV.
Jones, who had four TD passes in a 52-33 loss to Liberty a week ago, connected with Emmanuel Harris and Delane Hart-Johnson in the second half. Jones was also the leading rusher with 72 yards as the Lobos picked up 252 of their 502 yards on the ground.
The Rebels (2-3) were without starter Armani Rogers, ensuring a 22nd straight season without the same quarterback starting every game of a season. His replacement, Max Gilliam, was 15 of 35 for 123 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. He was sacked five times. Lexington Thomas, who averages 116.3 on the ground, was held to 36 yards, leaving him 11 yards shy of 3,000 for his career.
UNLV, which entered the game averaging 336.5 rushing yards, finished with 36.
