Winchester, Blue Devils wallop Robert Morris 49-28
NEW BRITAIN, Conn. -- Aaron Winchester ran for four touchdowns, passed for another and Central Connecticut State used a burst of four unanswered TDs to break away from Robert Morris 49-28 on Saturday to clinch the Northeast Conference championship and automatic bid to the FCS playoffs.
Danley Exilhomme led all rushers with 185 yards on 26 carries, Winchester gained 91 yards with touchdowns on keepers of 2, 10, 2 and 1 yards. Tyshaun James caught three passes for 68 yards and a TD for the No. 19 Blue Devils (10-1, 8-0).
The 10-win season is a first for CCSU, which clinched the NEC title after its win and Bryant's upset of Duquesne.
Winchester finished 8 of 14 passing for 111 yards and no interceptions.
Robert Morris, which came in on a five-game win streak, had a chance to clinch the NEC title and FCS playoff berth. After CCSU took the game-opening possession 84 yards in more than seven minutes to score, the Colonials answered with quickly with 14 points.
Matt Gonzales and Jacob White started things when Gonzales blocked an attempted punt and White returned it 21-yards to score. Caleb Lewis found DeLano Madison for a 13-yard scoring strike and a 14-7 lead
Winchester tied it before halftime with a 10-yard run and put the Blue Devils ahead for good with a 2-yard score to open the second half.
