Rovers hold out to deny Shrews

Tranmere saw off a late Shrewsbury rally as first-half goals from Rory Donnelly and Danny Holmes proved the difference in a 2-1 victory. The hosts scored on the half-hour mark when Marc Laird played in Donnelly, who stroked the ball past Jayson Leutwiler. That lead was doubled three minutes later when full-back Holmes capitalised on indecision in the Shrewsbury defence to drill in from the edge of the area. And Jennison Myrie-Williams almost added a third before half-time with a curling shot that hit the post. After the break James Collins' attempt was flicked over the bar by Tranmere keeper Owain Fon Williams before Max Power came close to extending Rovers' lead in the 62nd minute when his free-kick was tipped wide by Leutwiler.Play was then delayed while Shrewsbury's Mickey Demetriou received lengthy treatment following a collision with Kayode Odejayi. With eight minutes left the visitors pulled one back when Connor Goldson headed home from Bobby Grant's corner, before Tyrone Barnett missed a volley from 12 yards and Collins hit the bar in the 11 minutes of injury time.
