Freiburg boost survival fight

Freiburg picked up a crucial win in their battle against relegation, beating Augsburg 2-0 to move out of the relegation zone on Saturday.Goals in the final 20 minutes from Jonathan Schmid and Nils Petersen was enough to earn Christian Streich's men only their fifth win of the season, taking them above both Hamburg and Paderborn and out of the bottom three.Defeat dents Augsburg's hopes of qualifying for Europe next season, although they remain a point clear of Hoffenheim in the top six.Augsburg coach Markus Weinzierl said prior to the trip to the Black Forest that his side were going to try to qualify for Europe next season with their place in the top flight secured, and his side did not look short of confidence.Freiburg, who have spent practically the entire season inside the bottom three, belied their position with some confident play too, making for an entertaining and fast-paced game.Admir Mehmedi wasted a good chance for the hosts half an hour in when he completely missed the ball with only Marwin Hitz to beat.Mehmedi had the next best chance of the game on the hour mark with a header he should really have done better with, but he missed the target from just six yards out.The chances were now starting to arrive for the hosts and, just 10 minutes later, they finally managed to break the deadlock.Oliver Sorg picked up the ball from a long throw-in and squared it for Schmid, whose shot went in off the inside of the far post, sending the Dreisamstadion faithful wild with a mixture of joy and relief.Petersen just missed the target five minutes later as Freiburg pressed for a second, which they found with five minutes to go when Vladimir Darida pulled his pass back to Petersen, who provided the finish from close to the penalty spot.
