Wolfsburg pile misery on Werder
Wolfsburg bounced back from defeat to Hertha Berlin in midweek with a 2-1 win over Werder Bremen which compounds the woes of their northern Germany rivals.Ricardo Rodriguez put the Wolves in front after 15 minutes, but Marnon Busch levelled for the visitors before the break.Ivica Olic restored Wolfsburg's lead and Dieter Hecking's men had chances to put the result beyond doubt, although two goals proved to be enough to lift them to seventh in the Bundesliga, leaving Bremen languishing in 17th, one point ahead of Hamburg who have a game in hand. Both sides showed plenty of attacking intent early on, with Santiago Garcia's shot blocked by Hunt before Ivan Perisic missed the target from distance. The Wolves got lucky in the 14th minute when Diego Benagio struck his attempted clearance against Nils Petersen, but the ball rebounded wide of his goal. That relief was followed by another a minute later when the hosts took the lead.Rodriguez provided the finish to a quick break, inspired by a pin-point pass from Kevin De Bruyne as the Wolves broke from a corner at the other end of the field.Luiz Gustavo saw his shot blocked from point-blank range when the Brazilian seemed odds-on to double Wolfsburg's lead in the 24th minute, and Hunt also had an effort blocked as Bremen defended resolutely. At just the right time they then struck to level, with Busch's deflected effort finding its way past Benaglio shortly before the break. The equaliser gave Bremen a little more belief and they started to take a few more risks in the second half, suffering the sucker punch when Perisic crossed for Olic to put Wolfsburg back in front with a diving header in the 57th minute.Bremen refused to lie down, though, and it took a brave block from Robin Knoche to deny Franco Di Santo from equalising midway through the second half.Hunt then missed the chance to score against his former club as the chances came thick and fast at both ends of the field.Bremen appeared to run out of energy and ideas, effectively making it easy for Wolfsburg to hold on to their lead and the three points at the VW-Arena.
