Russia 0-1 Austria

Marc Janko scored a spectacular goal as Austria claimed a 1-0 win over Russia to maintain their grip at the top of the Group G standings in Sunday's Euro 2016 qualifier in Moscow.Russia were guilty of not clearing the ball from their penalty area and Janko capitalised with an overhead effort to beat goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev from close range in the first half.It meant Austria made it five wins and a draw in their qualifying campaign and moved them further clear of second-placed Sweden, who play Montenegro in the later kick-off, to sit top of the standings with 16 points.Russia, meanwhile, were left languishing in third place in the pool on eight points.Janko broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute after Zlatko Junuzovic's shot was blocked. The Sydney FC forward was on hand to follow up and found the bottom right of the Russia goal with an overhead kick which gave Akinfeev no chance.Austria should have doubled their lead five minutes before the break when a stunning cross-field pass by Junuzovic put Julian Baumgartlinger through on goal, but, with only Akinfeev to beat, the midfielder pulled his shot wide of the target.Russia had their best chance of the match early in the second half when Roman Shirokov set up a great disguised pass for Alexey Miranchuk, but he was unable to get enough on the ball to get it past Robert Almer.Shirokov again almost created the equaliser in the 67th minute when he came close to picking out Oleg Shatov, but the ball was just ahead of the midfielder in the hosts' last real chance of the match.ends
