Accrington maintain promotion charge with win at Newport

Accrington are just a point off the automatic promotion spots in Sky Bet League Two after a 2-0 win at Newport.First-half goals from Billy Kee and Josh Windass lifted John Coleman's side to fourth place after a fourth win in five games. Both sides struggled with the Rodney Parade surface that had endured heavy rain and a rugby match the previous night.Newport came to terms with the pitch the quickest, twice forcing goalkeeper Ross Etheridge into action, but it was the visitors who took control of the game with two goals in quick succession.Accrington's first came in the 35th minute when Matty Pearson's shot was parried by Joe Day but the ball fell for Kee who slotted home his 17th goal of the campaign. Two minutes later Windass got on the end of Piero Mingoia's cross and fired past Day to mark his first appearance since January with a goal.Jake Gosling's effort from the edge of the area was blocked as Newport looked for a way back into the game in the second half while at the other end Windass' curling effort narrowly missed the target.Any hope of a Newport comeback were ended when Gosling's 82nd-minute free-kick missed the target.
