Hartlepool boost survival hopes with away point
Hartlepool moved eight points clear of the League Two relegation places with a 0-0 draw at Newport County.Craig Hignett's side are now unbeaten in three league fixtures and still have two games in hand over York in 23rd place.Newport had the better of the first half and twice went close through left-back Andrew Hughes.Lewis Hawkins had the best chance for the visitors with a burst into the box but his shot was well saved by Joe Day.After the interval Pools captain Billy Paynter had a great chance to put the visitors in front but he hit a tame shot at Day after being put through on goal.Pools goalkeeper Trevor Carson produced a fine save to keep out Medy Elito's long-range effort with 20 minutes to play.Carson then pulled off an even better stop to tip Jake Gosling's curling free kick over the crossbar.Exiles captain Mark Byrne blazed over the bar with 10 minutes left on the clock as both sides struggled to find a winner.
