Neal Bishop boosts Scunthorpe beyond Burton

A first goal of the season from midfielder Neal Bishop earned Scunthorpe a 1-0 home victory against promotion-chasing Burton in Sky Bet League One.It came on the hour when he fired a shot home from close range after centre-back David Mirfin's header from a corner had been half blocked. It was Scunthorpe's reward for an improved second-half showing after they had struggled to break down a solid Burton defence in the opening period. It was Burton who almost broke the stalemate in the first half, just before the interval, when a low raking 20-yard drive from Callum Butcher forced a full stretch to his right from goalkeeper Joe Anyon, who was deputising for the injured Luke Daniels.Scunthorpe started the second half in much brighter fashion and only a great reaction save by McLaughlin kept out a stinging close-range effort from full-back Jordan Clarke. The home side kept up the pressure and were finally rewarded on the hour with Bishop's goal after Burton failed to deal with a corner.Burton quickly responded by bringing on substitute Mason Bennett and he went close to an equaliser with almost his first touch, but his shot was parried away by Anyon. The visitors continued to press for an equaliser.Centre back Tom Flanagan headed just wide from a corner before midfielder Butcher was denied again when his fierce drive was tipped over by Anyon.
