Wolfsburg frustrated on home turf

Wolfsburg failed to get the better of their northern rivals Hamburg as they could only secure a 1-1 Bundesliga draw.

Nicolai Muller gave Hamburg a deserved lead early on, but Wolfsburg eventually took charge of the game and found an equaliser through Maximilian Arnold in the 78th minute.

Despite their efforts, the Wolves were unable to find a winner as they dropped points at home for the second game running.

Diego Benaglio turned Pierre-Michel Lasogga's shot wide for a corner as Hamburg showed why they have one of the best records away from home in the league this season.

Their good early pressure eventually paid off. Benaglio did his best to keep out Lasogga's shot, but he could only parry it out to Muller to put the guests in front in the 21st minute.

The Swiss goalkeeper may have been angry with himself, but he was even angrier with his defender Dante for giving away possession cheaply to Lasogga in the first place.

The Wolves were a shadow of the side which sent Manchester United tumbling out of the Champions League in midweek, and perhaps that game had taken too much out of them both physically and psychologically.

Bas Dost was sent on at the start of the second half, but the Dutch forward was unable to make an impact alone, which is why Dieter Hecking turned to Daniel Caligiuri with his next throw of the dice.

Things then started to fall into place with Wolfsburg putting pressure on their guests with first Josuha Guilavogui and then Naldo testing Rene Adler.

He was in for a busy 25 minutes, too, as the Wolves roared at the Hamburg defence, Caligiuri next to test Adler's reactions.

His and Hamburg's resistance was broken when Julian Draxler and Vieirinha combined to set up Arnold for the overdue equaliser, and there were still over 10 minutes to play in the VW-Arena.

That was not enough time for Hecking's men to find a winner, though, as they stumbled in front of their own fans again after losing to Borussia Dortmund in their last home league game.
