Borussia Monchengladbach lost their second game in a row this season, going down 2-1 at home to Mainz to go bottom of the Bundesliga on Sunday evening.

Jairo Samperio gave Mainz, who were also seeking their first points of the season, the lead just before half-time, but after a stunning effort from Patrick Herrmann brought Gladbach level, it seemed like only one team would go on to win.

The hosts wasted chance after chance to take the lead as Mainz held on for dear life, breaking in the 79th minute to regain the lead against the run of play through Christian Clemens.

Gladbach were unable to respond and were lucky to see Yoshinori Muto waste two gilt-edged chances to give Mainz a more handsome win as Lucien Favre's men slumped to the bottom of the table.
