Australia put five past Bangladesh in second straight WC qualifier win

AFC Asian Cup champions Australia scored four first half goals as they trounced Bangladesh 5-0 for their second straight World Cup qualifying win in Perth on Thursday night.

In the Group B match at nib Stadium, Mathew Leckie opened the scoring for Ange Postecoglou's side in the sixth minute before Celtic playmaker Tom Rogic doubled the advantage two minutes later.

Bangladesh defender Topu Barman's own goal in the 29th minute -- deflected from a long range Rogic shot -- was followed two minutes later by the Socceroos' fourth from striker Nathan Burns.

Midfielder Aaron Mooy completed the tally in the 61st minute to send the home team to the top of Group B on six points.

Australia, who beat Kyrgyzstan 2-1 in June in their opening qualifier, now travel to Tajikistan for their third qualifying match.

The nation's all-time leading scorer, Tim Cahill, who has appeared in the Socceroos' last three World Cups, was a second half substitute.

Socceroo coach Ange Postecoglou praised the new attacking midfield combination of Rogic and Mooy.

"We actually wanted to use our football to overcome them [Bangladesh] and for the most part we stuck to the task," he told FFA.com.au.

"The new combination of Tom Rogic and Aaron Mooy worked well. They were a constant threat just in behind the frontline along with Massimo Luongo.

"That's the first time they've [Rogic and Mooy] played together. And I think in the starting XI we had three guys who'd played over 20 games so it was a pretty inexperienced group."

The Socceroos' squad leave for Tajikistan on Friday.
