America beat Tigres 4-1 on aggregate to win CONCACAF Champions League

Club America defeated Tigres 2-1 on Wednesday in front of an almost full Estadio Azteca to lift the CONCACAF Champions League for a second consecutive year, after a 4-1 series win on aggregate.

France international Andre-Pierre Gignac opened the scoring in the 39th minute to give Tigres a glimmer of hope, but Ecuadorian Michael Arroyo netted a solo effort in the 68th and Osvaldo Martinez scored a penalty in the 87th to wrap up the tie.

Las Aguilas will again represent the CONCACAF region at the Club World Cup in Japan next December.

Tigres had more possession (62 percent to 38 percent) than America and more shots (14 to 10), but were always up against it after the 2-0 loss in the first leg in Estadio Universitario, with the away goal rule in place.

Club America coach Ignacio "Nacho" Ambriz sent out an attack-minded starting XI and the home side initially took the initiative, although Tigres slowly wrestled back control of the game in the first half.

Euro 2016 hopeful Gignac's opener came with a calm finish from next to the penalty spot, following a cut-back from winger Javier Aquino to set him up.

Tigres grew in confidence from there, but America held firm in a game in which the flow was disrupted by a total of 30 fouls.

Arroyo practically finished the series off with a solo goal, for which he cut in from the left wing, dribbled past three Tigres defenders and bounced a shot past Nahuel Guzman into the goal.

Martinez's driven penalty -- following a foul by Hugo Ayala on Miguel Samudio -- wrapped up the match, although Fernando Fernandez had had a good chance to get Tigres back in the game with a close-range effort in the 75th minute.

This was the 11th consecutive occasion a team from Mexico's first division has won CONCACAF's regional club tournament.
