Spain fall to Georgia in final friendly ahead of Euro 2016

Spain will head into Euro 2016 on the back of an embarrassing defeat as Vicente del Bosque's side were beaten 1-0 at home to Georgia.

The 2010 world champions are one of the favourites to lift the title in France but their final warm-up match ended in humiliation after Tornike Okriashvili fired Georgia to a shock victory in Madrid.

Georgia sit 137th in the FIFA world rankings, 131 places below Spain's star-studded squad, but mistakes at the back and indecision up front ended their 11-game unbeaten streak.

In terms of rankings alone, it is Spain's worst defeat in the country's history.

The loss also turns up the heat on Del Bosque, who is under pressure to deliver this summer following Spain's group-stage exit at the World Cup two years ago, a campaign which included a 5-1 thrashing at the hands of Netherlands.

Del Bosque could hardly claim to have fielded a weakened side either, with David De Gea, Sergio Ramos, Gerard Pique, Jordi Alba, Sergio Busquets and Thiago Alcantara just some of those expected to retain their starting spots against the Czech Republic in six days' time.

Croatia and Turkey are the other sides competing for qualification from Group D.

David Silva, Koke and Andres Iniesta all came on in the second half and the performance may increase calls for Alvaro Morata, left on the bench as he recovers from a hamstring injury, to start up front.

Spain enjoyed the majority of possession throughout the contest and almost opened the scoring when Thiago's first-half shot cannoned off the post.

Three minutes later, however, it was Georgia who broke the deadlock as an error from the usually dependable Ramos allowed Jambul Jigauri time to pick out Okriashvili, who slotted home.

Iniesta went close in the second half as Spain pushed for an equaliser but Georgia held firm to seal a momentous win.

There was a scary moment shortly after half-time when Georgia goalkeeper Nukri Revishvili clashed heads with Spain's Sergio Busquets.

Revishvili was bloodied and had to leave the game, but Busquets played on for another 20 minutes before being replaced by Pedro. 

The loss was Spain's first since a 2-0 setback against Netherlands in a friendly on March 31, 2015.
