Mariners run without a win extended to four after draw at Newport
Grimsby saw their winless run extended to four games after an uneventful goalless draw against basement-boys Newport. The Exiles are still five points from safety, while the Mariners remain in 13th position in the Sky Bet League Two table.Ryan Bird, one of 14 players signed by Newport boss Graham Westley since the turn of the year, should have given them the lead in the 33rd minute but the striker fired over from close range after a blocked clearance fell his way.Marcus Bignot's play-off chasing Grimsby started to threaten just before half time.Danny Andrew had two opportunities to put Grimsby ahead when his in-swinging free-kick struck the post and he was unlucky again after his goal-bound effort was headed away by David Pipe.Swansea City loanee Josh Sheehan tried to make things happen for Newport but the Welsh club failed to create any meaningful openings in the second half, with Grimsby also offering very little.
