Chivas Guadalajara defeats America in spiteful Clasico Nacional clash
The 227th edition of Mexico's Clasico Nacional ended in Chivas' favour as they defeated Club America 1-0 on Saturday night.
Angel Zaldivar netted the only goal of the match as Chivas got their first Clasico Nacional win at home since 2011. Visitors America finished the game with zero shots on goal.
After controlling the possession of the ball for much of the first half, Chivas found a way to take the lead via the penalty spot.
Zaldivar, who has yet to miss a penalty kick in Liga MX, coolly slotted the ball past goalkeeper Agustin Marchesin after Alan Pulido drew a penalty from Pablo Aguilar in the 30th minute.
Chivas took the initiative in the second half, while America maintained its organization in the back, adding defensive midfielder Javier Guemez to its wall of five at the back.
Although America had talented offensive players up front, it hardly worried Chivas' defense. As the hosts kept pushing forward, America's Miguel Samudio was red-carded for an apparent stomp on Jesus "Chapo" Sanchez's leg in the 51st minute.
Samudio's exit complicated things for America, and a sense of desperation was realised when manager Ricardo La Volpe lost his temper in the 74th minute. The America tactician deliberately left his coaching area to trip Sanchez. La Volpe was also sent-off.
