Richie Bennett bags brace as Carlisle edge Oldham to reach FA Cup second round

Two goals from Richie Bennett and one from Hallam Hope helped Carlisle claim an FA Cup scalp, as the hosts beat Oldham 3-2 to reach the second round.Latics supporter and former schoolboy player Bennett netted the opener after 22 minutes, getting on the end of a far-post header from former Oldham defender Clint Hill to nod home from close range. That strike came after the visitors had enjoyed the better of the opening exchanges, with Dan Gardner striking a 20-yard shot against the crossbar.Craig Davies also forced a sharp close-range save from Jack Bonham but - after Bennett had struck - Hope doubled the advantage for the League Two club 10 minutes before the break with a fierce left-footed half-volley from the edge of the penalty area that flew into the right-hand corner.Bennett's second on the hour came after he met a Reggie Lambe cross with his head from close range.Peter Clarke headed in smartly from Cameron Dummigan's centre in the 64th minute to give Oldham hope and substitute Aaron Amadi-Holloway then struck home low from a rebound after Bonham had initially saved his first effort from a corner kick, but it was not enough for Richie Wellens' side.
