Chivas Guadalajara lose to Esperance on penalties at Club World Cup
Nine-man Esperance, of Tunisia, beat Mexico's Chivas Guadalajara 6-5 on penalties after a 1-1 draw to claim fifth place at the Club World Cup on Tuesday.
Chivas took the lead through a Walter Sandoval penalty in the fifth minute, after VAR adjudged that Sameh Derbali had felled Angel Zaldivar inside the area.
But seven minutes before half-time the scores were level as Josecarlos Van Rankin was penalised for handball in the box, and Mohammed Belaili made no mistake from the spot.
Esperance had Anice Badri sent off for a second bookable offence in the 79th minute, and Houcine Rebai also saw red for a poor challenge on Isaac Brizuela in the final moments.
But the CONCACAF champions emerged victorious as Chamseddine Dhaouadi fired home the winning spot kick in the shootout.
