Penalty takes Jamaica through against Panama

A second half penalty kick from Darren Mattocks put Jamaica into their third consecutive Gold Cup semifinal on Sunday with a 1-0 win over Panama in Philadelphia.

Mattocks struck from the penalty spot with less than 15 minutes remaining, but the call was somewhat controversial.

Michael Murillo was whistled after he went for a header and the ball glanced off his hand -- which looked to be in a natural position -- narrowly inside the corner of his own penalty area. With no VAR at the tournament, the call was not reviewed, and Mattocks hammered the ensuing PK into the right side of the net.

Panama's Armando Cooper had his attempt saved two minutes later, but that proved to be his team's last shot on goal. Jamaican keeper Andre Blake finished with two saves in the match.

The result means Jamaica, runners up in both 2015 and 2017, will play the winner of the second semifinal between the United states and Curacao.

Mexico will play Haiti in the other semi-final. (Reporting by Andrew Downie; Editing by Greg Stutchbury)
