Tigres edge Real Salt Lake in Leagues Cup
Reigning Liga MX champions Tigres defeated Real Salt Lake 1-0 on Wednesday in Rio Tinto Stadium to set up a Leagues Cup semifinal against Club America.
A strike from 30-meters by Chile international Eduardo Vargas in the 57th minute deflected off RSL defender Justen Glad and wrong-footed keeper Nick Rimando to give Tigres the quarterfinal win.
Tigres had dominated the game in terms of possession, but Real Salt Lake had its opportunities, with Ecuadorian winger Joao Plata striking the post just two minutes before Vargas handed Tigres the lead.
RSL's Brooks Lennon was sent off late on for high kick on Javier Aquino and head coach Mike Petke was fuming at the officials on the final whistle.
Tigres and Club America will face off on Aug. 20 in Houston, with the other semifinal between LA Galaxy and Cruz Azul in California.
The final of the inaugural edition of Leagues Cup will be played on Sept. 18 in Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas.
