Monterrey win FIFA Club World Cup third-place playoff against Al-Hilal on penalties
Monterrey won their FIFA Club World Cup third-place playoff against Al-Hilal on penalties following a 2-2 draw in regular time on Saturday, with goalkeeper Luis Cardenas netting the winning spot kick.
The Mexican giants were agonisingly close to forcing a penalty shootout in their semifinal clash with Liverpool before Roberto Firmino earned Jurgen Klopp's side the victory, while Al Hilal were beaten 3-1 by Flamengo, having led at half-time.
Carlos Eduardo de Oliveira Alves opened the scoring 10 minutes before half time before Arturo Gonzalo levelled on 55 minutes.
Maximiliano Meza then put Monterrey in front just five minutes later before Bafetimbi Gomes made it 2-2 on 66 minutes, which is how the match finished.
With the penalties level at 2-2, Al Hilal skipper Carlos Eduardo was the first to miss and, as both sides scored their next efforts, Monterrey's Johan Vasquez shot wide.
However, Mohamed Kanno missed with his effort next, leaving goalkeeper Cardenas with the opportunity to seal the victory and he duly did.
