Keeper howler sees Guinea down Guinea-Bissau

Guinea-Bissau goalkeeper Alberto Coli's horror error saw him cost his side as they lost 2-0 to Guinea in the quarterfinals of the 2019 WAFU Cup of Nations Plate competition at the Stade Lat Dior in Thies, Senegal on Oct. 3.

It was certainly not the most entertaining opening half with both teams rather poor in attack, which was largely due to woeful passing and bad decision making in the final third

The first real chance of the game fell to Guinea-Bissau in the 11th minute when Claudio Gomes drove down the right flank and squared for Florentino da Silva, but he headed wide from six yards out under no pressure from the defence.

Guinea's only real scoring opportunity of the half came in the 19th minute when Mamaddouba Bangoura met a right-wing cross from Alpha Oumar Sow, but his volley went inches over the crossbar from 10 yards out.

That was about as good as it got in the first 45 with the half ending goalless.

Guinea came out strong at the start of the second half and came close to taking the lead 10 minutes after the restart when Bangoura broke through on goal, but he was superbly denied in a one-on-one with the keeper.

In the 58th minute Syli Nationale were bitterly unlucky not to score when Sow found himself in behind the defence, but his 12-yard volley struck the crossbar. Morlaye Sylla was quick to follow-up the rebound but his ten-yard header also came off the crossbar.

Guinea struck the woodwork for the third time in the half in the 80th minute when a long range shot from Bangoura hit the right-hand post with the keeper well-beaten.

Six minutes later Syli Nationale did take the lead after a mistake from keeper Alberto Coli saw him spill a long range shot from Sylla into the path of Ousmane Camara and he dully tapped home from close range to make it 1-0.

Guinea doubled their lead in the 88th minute after a spectacular 24-yard volley from Victor Kantabadouno found the bottom corner of the net and will now face the winner of the match between Niger and Liberia in the semifinals of the Plate competition on Oct. 8.
