FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup: India end campaign with 0-5 defeat against Brazil
India's U-17 Women's World Cup campaign came to an end with a 5-0 defeat against Brazil at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar on Monday.
After losses to the USA and Morocco, India were already out of the contention for quarterfinals. The team had hoped for a better performance against Brazil, with an aim to score their first goal in the tournament but that didn't happen.
Aline and Lara netted a brace for Brazil while Gabriele Berchon also added her name on the scoresheet.
India head coach Thomas Dennerby made two changes from last game against the USA.
Shailja replaced Naketa in defence while Rejiya Laishram came in for Nitu Linda in attack. Brazil made as many as six changes from their previous match, with only Alice retaining her place at left-back.
As expected, Brazil dominated the possession as soon as the match began. Before they could create any meaningful opportunities, India had a half a chance in the sixth minute when it looked like Anita Kumari beat the offside trap. But she lacked the pace to reach for the through ball as the Brazillian goalkeeper Leilane cleared the danger away.
Brazil then had a good opportunity to break the deadlock when India failed to clear the ball away inside their box. Jhonson latched on it but her shot lacked the power and precision.
Few minutes later, Brazil opened the scoring with a superb finish from Berchon. Aline received the ball on the right, sprinted ahead keeping Astam Oraon at bay. She pulled it back to Berchon who made no mistake from the centre of the box. It took only 11 minutes for them to open the scoring.
In the 30th minute, Neha intercepted a pass in the midfield and took the ball away from the last defender. Instead of running towards the goal with the ball, she took an early shot which was calmly collected by Leilane.
Two minutes later, Alice got the ball on the edge of the box after a long pass from the defence. Her shot was on target but Melody Chanu was at the right spot to catch the ball.
Five minutes before the half-time break, Brazil doubled their lead, similar in the manner to their first goal. Ana Flavia, who had shifted to the right flank, received the ball and made a run into the box. She passed it to Aline who took one touch before finding the back of the net.
Post the break, Aline produced a moment of magic to score the third goal for Brazil and her second of the night. She received the pass outside the box, her touch was sublime as she made space and curled in a right-footer to the top right corner of the net. Melody Chanu had no chance of stopping the shot. The scoreline read 3-0 in the 51st minute.
Brazil kept the intensity going even after taking a three-goal lead and made sure Melody stays busy with her saves.
Meanwhile, Dennerby made two changes as the second-half progressed. Rejiya Laishram went out for Lavanya Upadhyay while Shelia Loktongbal came in for Kajol Dsouza.
Aline was looking good for her hat-trick but Brazil head coach Simone took her off in the 68th minute, to keep her fresh for the quarterfinal. They also removed their goalkeeper in the 81st minute, replacing her with Eluiza Maria.
Brazil added a fourth in the 87th minute with Lara scoring another long-ranger. She smashed it from the left side, outside the box and once again, Melody had no chance of saving it.
Lara was not done though as she added one more goal to her and Brazil's tally in the 93rd minute. This time, she took her shot from the left, again from outside the box and beat Melody at the far corner with the ball hitting the roof of the net.
USA won their final group stage match against Morocco 4-0. They topped the group with seven points ahead of Brazil. USA will take on Nigeria in the quarterfinal while Brazil will face Germany.
