Early penalty conversion lifts Reign over Spirit

SEATTLE -- Bethany Balcer's early penalty conversion proved decisive as Seattle Reign FC then held off the Washington Spirit to secure a 1-0 victory Sunday at Lumen Field.

Balcer, who was instrumental throughout, netted her goal in just the third minute after Jordyn Huitema drew a foul inside the penalty area. Balcer confidently slotted her right-footed shot into the bottom left corner past Spirit goalkeeper Aubrey Kingsbury.

Other notable Seattle contributions came from Jess Fishlock, who provided key assists and had two shots saved by Kingsbury, and Ji So-Yun, who made several crucial passes and whose defensive efforts helped keep Washington at bay.

The game saw its share of dramatic moments, including an injury to Kate Wiesner of Washington in the first half that led to her substitution by Annaïg Butel. The second half featured intense action, with both teams making strategic substitutions, but was marred by disciplinary issues for the Spirit. Casey Krueger received a yellow card for a bad foul late in the game, and Kingsbury was shown a red card for handling outside her area after a VAR review.

Ashley Hatch was a bright spot for Washington, leading its offensive efforts and managing one significant attempt -- a header from close range that forced Claudia Dickey into an impressive save -- before being substituted due to injury concerns.
