Esther González scores from inside the box to give Gotham FC a 1-0 lead over the Portland Thorns.

NJ/NY Gotham FC secured a 1-0 victory over the Portland Thorns on Sunday at Providence Park thanks to a goal by Esther González in the 72nd minute.

Assisted by Yazmeen Ryan, González found herself in perfect position inside the box and slotted home a right-footed shot into the bottom right corner past goalkeeper Shelby Hogan.

Gotham FC goalkeeper Cassie Miller made several crucial saves, including stopping a shot from Sophia Smith in the 87th minute.

Portland's Morgan Weaver then missed a header to the top left corner that would have tied the score five minutes into stoppage time. 

Late in the first half, Smith had an attempt saved by Miller after being set up by Jessie Fleming following a fast break.
