Colorado Rapids, FC Dallas open season with scoreless draw

The Colorado Rapids and host FC Dallas played to a scoreless draw on Saturday in the season-opening match for both teams in Frisco, Texas.

The goalkeepers were the stars of the game, with Jimmy Maurer recording six saves for Dallas while William Yarbrough turned away five shots for Colorado. It was the 12th career clean sheet for Maurer, and the fifth shutout for Yarborough.

The game stats reflected the overall even play between the teams. FC Dallas had a 54.5-45.5 edge in possession percentage, an 85.7 to 77.9 percent edge in passing accuracy while the Rapids finished with more shots on goal (6-5), more corners (8-6) and more fouls (16-12).

Colorado had an excellent scoring chance in the 26th minute when Younes Namli's left-footed laser from the right edge of the box was turned away by Maurer. The Rapids' Michael Barrios also had a shot go off the post in the 30th minute.

The half-time statistics illustrated a very even first 45 minutes. Colorado owned a 52.7 to 47.3 edge in possession percentage and a 7-5 advantage in shots while FC Dallas led 4-3 in shots on goal and earned a 83.3 to 80.7 margin in passing accuracy.

Barrios was denied again in the 79th minute, blasting a shot off Maurer after a breakaway. The shot was the first on goal for either team in the second half. The Rapids had a 3-1 edge in shots on goal in the second half.

FC Dallas has not lost a season-opening game since 2009, winning seven and drawing five over the past 12 matches. Colorado has a win, a loss and a two draws since 2018 in season openers.
