Williams hits late 3 to lead Appalachian St. to 79-73 win

MONROE, La. -- O'Showen Williams drilled a 3-pointer in the final minutes and Justin Forrest added a late layup to secure Appalachian State's 79-73 win over Louisiana Monroe in Sun Belt Conference action on Saturday afternoon.

UL Monroe was up 37-34 at the break and pushed its advantage to 54-43 early in the second period. Appalachian State chipped away at the lead until Isaac Johnson made two free throws for a 72-71 advantage with 2:10 left. Williams followed with his trey and then added two free throws in the final seconds to seal the win.

Appalachian State outscored the Warhawks 13-2 over the last 3:52.

Ronshad Shabazz led the Mountaineers (8-9, 3-1) with 22 points. Forrest added 14, Williams finished with 12 points and Craig Hinton chipped in 11.

Both teams made 29 field goals but Appalachian State made three more from deep and had three more free throws.

Jordan Harris led the Warhawks (7-8, 1-3) with 17 points.
