Mitchell lifts South Alabama over Texas St. 58-54

MOBILE, Ala. -- Trhae Mitchell tallied 14 points and 12 rebounds to lift South Alabama to a 58-54 win over Texas State on Tuesday night, the Jaguars' eighth straight victory.

Chad Lott had 16 points for South Alabama (20-11, 13-7 Sun Belt Conference). Andre Fox added 12 points.

The Jaguars earned the No. 2 seed and an automatic berth into the semifinals of the conference tournament on Saturday. Third-seeded Texas State will host a game in Wednesday's quarterfinals.

Alonzo Sule's layup gave the Bobcats a 54-48 lead with 3:39 to play but Fox scored the game's final 12 points. He made back-to-back 3-pointers to tie it at 54-all with 2:18 left, added a layup about a minute later and capped the scoring with two free throws with 16 seconds to play. Texas State went 0 for 5 from the field and missed the front end of a one-and-one over the final 3 1/2 minutes.

Mason Harrell had 13 points for the Bobcats (20-11, 13-7), whose five-game winning streak came to an end. Sule added seven rebounds.

Nijal Pearson, the Bobcats' leading scorer coming into the contest at 20 points per game, scored only seven points on 3-of-14 shooting.
