Santiago beats former team, Twins top White Sox 7-2
CHICAGO -- White Sox catcher Geovany Soto was throwing Tuesday when he felt some sharp pain in the back of his right elbow. Again.
Soto went back on the 10-day disabled list Wednesday, and he said he doesn't know what's next after he was sidelined with the same issue last month.
"Floaters, loose bodies, bone chips. It's just unfortunately moving in there and one of those things where you kind of feel sharp, sharp pain," Soto said.
The White Sox also recalled catcher Kevan Smith from Triple-A Charlotte before Wednesday night's game against Minnesota was rained out. Smith also was promoted when Soto went on the DL in April and went 1 for 11 in three games.
"It's an easy transition. I feel comfortable up here," Smith said. "It feels like I haven't missed a beat."
There was light rain for much of the afternoon in the Chicago area and more precipitation in the forecast overnight. The rainout will be made up as part of a straight doubleheader on Aug. 21.
Wednesday's scheduled starters, Minnesota right-hander Phil Hughes and Chicago left-hander Derek Holland, were pushed back a day to the series finale. Miguel Gonzalez, Dylan Covey and Jose Quintana will pitch for the White Sox this weekend against San Diego, and Ervin Santana gets the ball for the Twins on Friday night at Cleveland.
The 34-year-old Soto is batting .190 with three homers and nine RBI in 13 games this season. He said surgery is an option.
"It's a possibility. Kind of waiting on what's the best route for us and see what the doctor can tell me about what's going on," he said.
Minnesota also made a move before the rainout, claiming left-hander Adam Wilk off waivers from the New York Mets. Right-hander Drew Rucinski was optioned to Triple-A Rochester to make room on the roster.
The 29-year-old Wilk was the Mets' emergency starter on Sunday when Matt Harvey was suspended. He started six games for Triple-A Las Vegas this season, going 2/3 with a 5.91 ERA. But the Twins plan to use him as a reliever.
"Adam is someone we had talked a little bit about this offseason in the minor league free-agent pool, someone who could provide length, who fits in the bullpen for us as a left-handed complement and we're glad to get him," general manager Derek Falvey said.
Minnesota has been in the middle of a shuffle of the starting rotation after sending Kyle Gibson down to Triple-A Rochester last week. Nick Tepesch and minor leaguers Jose Berrios and Adalberto Mejia are in the mix to start Saturday against the Indians.
TRAINER'S ROOM
Twins: 2B Brian Dozier, who sprained his left ankle during Friday's 4-3 victory against Boston, might return to the lineup for the series finale against the White Sox. "I think there's a pretty good chance we'll see him in there in some way I would imagine," manager Paul Molitor said. "The extra day definitely helps."
White Sox: RHP Zach Putnam (elbow inflammation) saw a doctor on Wednesday and had an MRI. "Looks like there has been some healing taken place and I think everybody is comfortable with the progress being made," he said. "We aren't going to jump out there and get on the mound right away. Build up slow and hopefully be ready, we haven't discussed a specific timeline, but I'm hoping a week and a half, two weeks tops."
UP NEXT
Hughes (4-1, 4.32 ERA) is coming off one of his best starts of the season, pitching 6 2/3 innings of one-run ball in a no-decision against Boston on Friday. He tossed six effective innings in a win against the White Sox on April 7. Holland (3-2, 2.02 ERA) is 2-0 with a 1.89 ERA in his last three starts.
