No. 17. Jack Tyler, LB, Virginia Tech
Previous ranking: Not ranked
Making the case for Tyler: He’s one of the best stories in the ACC, as he made the transformation from a walk-on to an all-conference linebacker in the ACC. Tyler started all 13 games last year and was a first-team all-conference selection by the league’s coaches. He was Virginia Tech’s leading tackler last season with 119 stops. Included in that total were 13 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks. He also had 13 quarterback hurries and three pass breakups. He’s a leader on what should be one of the best defenses in the ACC, and Tyler was named a permanent team captain after spring practices. Tyler said he’s always wanted to prove he is good enough to play at this level and he has done that.
