Colts return core offensive linemen for first time with Andrew Luck

The Indianapolis Colts open training camp on July 29 in Indianapolis. Here's a 53-man roster projection:

QUARTERBACKS (2): Andrew Luck, Scott Tolzien

The Colts often have kept just two quarterbacks on the roster in previous seasons. They could end up keeping a third -- Stephen Morris -- if Luck's shoulder problems still exist closer to the start of the regular season.

RUNNING BACKS (3): Frank Gore, Robert Turbin, Marlon Mack

It's important that the Colts get some kind of contribution from Turbin and Mack because the 34-year-old Gore had 216 more carries than the next-closest running back on the roster last season.

WIDE RECEIVER (6): T.Y. Hilton, Donte Moncrief, Phillip Dorsett, Chester Rogers, Kamar Aiken, Quan Bray

This unit could end up being the most talented Luck has had. Rogers had one of the most impressive offseasons of any player on the roster. Aiken, a former Baltimore Raven, will push Dorsett for the third receiver spot. Hilton led the NFL in receiving yards (1,448) last season.

TIGHT END (3): Jack Doyle, Erik Swoope, Brandon Williams

Doyle moves into the lead tight-end spot after finishing second on the team in receptions and receiving yards last season. Swoope, a former college basketball player, likely will be the pass-catching tight end of the group.

OFFENSIVE LINE (10): Anthony Castonzo, Jack Mewhort, Ryan Kelly, Joe Haeg, Le'Raven Clark, Denzelle Good, Zach Banner, Brian Schwenke, Adam Redmond, Jeremy Vujnovich

There are several familiar names on this list because this is the first time in Luck's six years in the NFL that the Colts are returning their core group of offensive linemen from the previous season. Now it's a matter of whether the group can do a better job of protecting him after giving up 44 sacks and 128 quarterback hits last season.

DEFENSIVE LINE (7): Kendall Langford, Henry Anderson, Johnathan Hankins, David Parry, Al Woods, Grover Stewart, T.Y. McGill

Hankins highlights this group, which needs to lead the improvement of a defense that finished 30th in the NFL last season. Langford missed seven games with a knee injury in 2016.

LINEBACKER (10): Antonio Morrison, Edwin Jackson, Jabaal Sheard, John Simon, Barkevious Mingo, Sean Spence, Anthony Walker Jr., Jon Bostic, Akeem Ayers, Tarell Basham

This unit might be the most competitive when it comes to playing time. It's not out of question that the Colts will face the Los Angeles Rams in Week 1 with four new starters at linebacker. The change was necessary because last season's group was the team's weakest.

CORNERBACK (5): Vontae Davis, Quincy Wilson, Rashaan Melvin, Darius Butler, Nate Hairston

The Colts hope Wilson or Melvin will provide some stability as second cornerback to go with Davis after dealing with injuries there the past four seasons. Butler will likely split time between playing in the slot and playing safety when needed.

SAFETY (4): Clayton Geathers, Malik Hooker, T.J. Green, Matthias Farley

Geathers' health is key for the Colts at safety. His athleticism allows them some versatility at that position because he also can be used as a fifth linebacker. However, Geathers missed the offseason recovering from neck surgery. Hooker will roam the middle of the field, and the Colts hope he will be able to force turnovers the way he did at Ohio State. He returned three of his seven interceptions for touchdowns last season.

SPECIALISTS (3): Kicker Adam Vinatieri, punter Jeff Locke, long-snapper Thomas Hennessy

This is the first time since 2012 that the trio of Vinatieri, Pat McAfee and Matt Overton won't be working the together. McAfee retired and Overton was released.
