Mets believe Ben Zobrist 'getting close' to decision

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The New York Mets expect to have a resolution on free-agent Ben Zobrist before departing the winter meetings Thursday.

"Every indication is he's getting close," assistant general manager John Ricco said Tuesday afternoon.

The rumblings are Zobrist will get a four-year deal, and the decision may come on Tuesday night.

The Mets again met with one of Zobrist's representatives Tuesday, but Ricco indicated the conversation centered on other clients. The agency, Octagon, also represents Gerardo Parra and Asdrubal Cabrera among others.

Ricco added that some negotiation would be left with Zobrist's agents to complete a deal.

"I think we each know the general parameters," Ricco said. "But, no, we're not at the point where we're engaged at that level. There's more discussions that need to be had."

Ricco added about the timetable: "We still anticipate he's going to make a decision here at some point shortly. We continue to keep in contact with him. We're hoping he comes our way. But there's still a lot of other work we're working on. We'll continue to keep in touch with him and his representatives."

The Mets also need a lefty-hitting center fielder to complement Juan Lagares as well as another setup man leading into closer Jeurys Familia. On those fronts, Ricco said: "Nothing has progressed further than gauging interest and what it might take to sign them or trade for them."
