Michigan LT Grant Newsome likely to undergo knee surgery

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Michigan left tackle Grant Newsome likely will need a "surgical procedure" on his injured right knee, head coach Jim Harbaugh said Saturday night.

Newsome left in the second quarter of No. 4 Michigan's 14-7 win over No. 8 Wisconsin after injuring the leg and did not return.

"It doesn't look good," Harbaugh said in a postgame press conference. "He was blocking on the edge, and he told me he got cut right at his knee. I don't know if it's a helmet or what it was."

Newsome remained on the ground for several minutes after the hit. Athletic trainers brought a cart onto the field to take him to the locker room. He refused it, instead hobbling toward the locker room while being helped by a pair of Michigan staff members.

Junior Juwann Bushell-Beatty replaced Newsome at left tackle. Michigan heads to Bushell-Beatty's home state of New Jersey next week for its first road game of the season against Rutgers.
