Why you should pick up Michael Beasley in fantasy

Each Monday throughout the fantasy basketball season, we go around the league and identify highly available players (owned in less than 50 percent of ESPN leagues) who can help improve your team in certain statistical categories.

This week, with the fantasy playoffs in full swing, we are narrowing our list to those who are playing at least four games over the next seven days.

Here are the ones to target this week, with their ESPN ownership listed:

Points

Matz

Doug McDermott, SF, Chicago Bulls (21.1)

McDermott doesn't do much more than score and hit the 3-ball in fantasy, but right now, he is doing both very well. He has averaged about 28 minutes in the past five games, and during that span, he has scored 18.2 points per game.

Matz

Michael Beasley, SF, Houston Rockets (37)

Beasley has averaged 17.8 points on 60.7 percent shooting over the past five games, despite playing only 23 minutes per game. The exciting part is that his minutes continue to rise; he has been on the court at least 26 minutes in three of the past four games. The 27-year-old is a gifted scorer who is available in over 60 percent of ESPN leagues.

Rebounds

Matz

Tyson Chandler, C, Phoenix Suns (45.5)

Chandler has grabbed at least 10 rebounds in six of the past eight games, and he is coming off a huge 12-point, 17-rebound performance against the Lakers on Friday. After a few nights off, the veteran should be ready heading into the Suns' four-game week.

Matz

Michael Beasley, SF, Houston Rockets (37)

Not only is Beasley scoring at a high clip, he's also rebounding like the monster he was on the glass in his college days at Kansas State. The former No. 2 overall pick in 2008 has pulled down 6.8 boards a game over the past five contests, and that number will likely rise as his minutes increase.

Assists

Matz

Brandon Jennings, PG, Orlando Magic (22.1)

Elfrid Payton returned to the Magic lineup over the weekend, but Jennings remained the starter and dished out seven assists in 31 minutes. This could change in the coming days, but Jennings is still going to earn enough minutes to be a factor in the assist department. He has dished out 7.3 dimes per game over the past four contests.

Matz

Patrick Beverley, PG, Houston Rockets (25.2)

Still owned in only a quarter of ESPN leagues, Beverley is contributing in a number of ways and assists (4.2 APG over past 10 games) is only one of them. He is also a solid secondary contributor in terms of points (9.4 PPG this season), rebounds (3.4 RPG), steals (1.4 SPG) and threes (1.7 3PG).

Steals

Matz

Thabo Sefolosha, SG, Atlanta Hawks (4)

The defensive-minded veteran swingman has notched at least one steal in each of the past five games, and he is coming off a 5-steal performance against Houston on Saturday. He always has a chance to rack up steals against teams that don't take care of the basketball, and this week, the Hawks twice face Washington (14.4 turnovers per game, which ranks 15th) and also Milwaukee (15.2 TPG, ranks 25th).

Matz

Omri Casspi, SF, Sacramento Kings (32.2)

Casspi can shoot, score, rebound and run the floor, but one of the overlooked parts of his game is his ability to get steals. The veteran has at least one in five of the past six games, and he has averaged 0.9 SPG on the season.

Blocks

Matz

Jerami Grant, SF/PF, Philadelphia 76ers (23.3)

It's amazing that Grant is owned is less than a quarter of ESPN leagues, because he is stuffing the stat sheet these days. Since coming back from a concussion, he has averaged 13 points and 6.7 rebounds over the past three games (though shooting just 28.1 percent from the field), but his biggest contribution comes on defense; he has blocked 2.7 shots a game over that span and averaged 1.7 BPG on the season.

Matz

Cody Zeller, PF/C, Charlotte Hornets (15.4)

Zeller had a defensive sequence last game in which he blocked three shots on one possession, bringing the crowd to its feet. He's not a prototypical shot blocker (0.8 BPG this season), but the 23-year-old can rack them up at times while averaging right around 25 minutes per game.

3-Pointers

Matz

Doug McDermott, SF, Chicago Bulls (21.1)

Like we mentioned above, McDermott is a force right now not only as a scorer but also as a long-range shooter. The former Creighton star has made three 3-pointers a game over the past five contests, and it's difficult to envision him slowing down from out there as long as he keeps playing close to 30 minutes a night.

Matz

Patty Mills, PG, San Antonio Spurs (6.8)

Rarely owned and overlooked, Mills can be counted on for right around 20 minutes a night and 1-2 threes per game. He has made 1.6 threes over the past five games, and also serves as a secondary contributor in terms of points and assists.
