Chicago White Sox place Garrett Crochet on 10-day IL; Luis Robert returns

The Chicago White Sox have placed rookie left-handed pitcher Garrett Crochet on the 10-day injured list with an upper back strain and reinstated outfielder Luis Robert, who had been on the IL with flu-like symptoms.

Crochet, whose IL move is retroactive to Monday, is being held out as a precaution, manager Tony La Russa told reporters.

The 21-year-old Crochet is 0-2 with a 1.00 ERA in eight relief appearances this season.

Robert had been placed on the IL on Tuesday after he informed the White Sox's medical staff of the symptoms Monday night. The 23-year-old Robert is hitting .305 with one home run and six RBIs in 21 games. He finished second in the American League Rookie of the Year voting last season.

The White Sox also recalled infielder Danny Mendick to serve as the 27th man for Thursday's doubleheader against the Detroit Tigers.

ESPN's Jesse Rogers and The Associated Press contributed to this report.
