Minnesota Timberwolves All-Star center Karl-Anthony Towns underwent surgery to repair a lateral meniscus tear in his left knee, the team announced Tuesday.
The Timberwolves characterized the surgery as a success and said Towns will be reevaluated in four weeks, at which point further updates will be provided.
Four weeks from Tuesday is April 9, which falls during the last week of the NBA regular season. ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported last week that Towns is expected to be back by early in the Western Conference playoffs.
The Timberwolves (45-21) are vying for the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference and trail the Oklahoma City Thunder and Denver Nuggets by a half-game.
Timberwolves coach Chris Finch said Towns' absence for much of last season with a calf injury prepared Minnesota for his current absence.
"Everybody goes through a tough stretch at some point (because of injuries)," Finch said after the Timberwolves roared back from an early 22-point deficit Tuesday night to beat the LA Clippers 118-100. "We're getting it now."
