Ed Reed set to return from PUP list

The Texans will activate safety Ed Reed from the physically unable to perform list Saturday and limit running back Arian Foster's carries in Houston's opener Sept. 9 in San Diego.

"He'll be back [Saturday] and we're hoping to do some field drills on Monday and Tuesday with our extra days, with him, with [head trainer Geoff Kaplan]," coach Gary Kubiak said of Reed. "So we'll probably make a quick decision early in the week, Monday or Tuesday on his availability for San Diego. But we're sitting here hoping and we'll see how that goes."

Reed has spent all of training camp and the preseason on the PUP list. The Texans have until 4 p.m. ET Saturday to officially remove him from the list. If they fail to do so, Reed would be required to remain on the regular-season PUP list for at least the first six weeks of the season.

Foster spent his offseason recovering from calf and back injuries; he missed the entire preseason.

"Obviously I don't think Arian is going to be a 30-carry guy opening night without camp," Kubiak said. "But he got good work last week. This is going to be a good week for him because we've actually got two extra days that can get us a couple extra padded practices before we start our week.

"Us opening on Monday should be beneficial to Arian, but we know [backup running back] Ben [Tate] is ready to go. He's had a great preseason and between the two of them, we've got to do it well. We obviously have to sit there and have a plan for Arian, being his first time out."
